If you’re in the mood for a feel good movie or need a picker-upper, The Legend of Bagger Vance, directed by Robert Redford, is for you. In fact, this movie is fun for the whole family. When it is over, you can ask yourself many questions. Questions like, “Is this story legend?” “Did Bagger Vance Really exist?” “Does Hardy’s memory serve him right?” Who cares! In my opinion, it’s worth the time!
The novel, The Legend of Bagger Vance, was written by Stephen Pressfield and screenplay written by Jeremy Leven. The movie stars Matt Damon as Rannulph Junah, a Savannah, Georgia local ex-amateur golfer, Will Smith, who brilliantly plays the role of Bagger Vance, and Charlize Theron who plays the wonderful role of Adele, Junah’s love interest. One other very loveable character, who I believe stole the show, was J. Michael Moncrief, playing young Hardy. He was fresh and did fantastic job with the delivery of his lines. Quite believable!
In a nutshell the plot was about a young man’s journey through struggles with his inner demons and overall loss of faith and it concludes with restored hope. What more could you ask for?
This is a golfer’s dream movie. Even if you are not a golfer, you can watch this show and enjoy every minute. The story begins slow but progresses to precision speed and is coupled with an excellent musical score which is delightful and often gave my heart a tug. Additionally, I found that the southern drawls mustered up by the actors were quite charming.
The cinematography is beautiful. Many scenes are filmed on the golf course. You can almost feel the dampness of the grass and the tingle in the air. Each time a golf ball is hit, it is like you are right there in the crowd waiting, with others, for the destination of its journey to reveal itself. Will it be a hole in one? Will Junah win the tournament? Who knows? You’ll have to watch to find out. I might warn you now, be ready because you might find yourself smiling often throughout the film.
